Chapter 10
Tips to Improve
Communication
It is obvious that you will have to send across a strong message in order to influence people and get them to listen to you. You will not be able to do so if you have poor communication skills and inappropriate body language. So, in this chapter, we will look at some tips to improve both your communication skills and your body language.
Speech
The first thing to improve upon is your language and the way you speak. Clarity is of utmost important and the other person should understand what you are trying to say. Imagine what would happen if you are the most powerful person in the room and yet nobody understands a thing you say? They will end up nodding their heads whilst not understanding a single word you said. So, you have to focus on your language, your speech giving skills, your intonation, the pitch to be used while speaking etc. Getting everything right will go a long way in helping you establish a good line of communication. If you are unable to improve your speech then you can consider meeting a speech expert, which will teach you to speak fluently. You can also consider taking online classes for the same.
Voice
Having a powerful voice is important. When you speak, everybody’s attention should move towards you and they should start paying attention from the very first word you say. It is obvious that most people will be attracted to a baritone. But you need not stress your vocal chords to speak in a deep voice. It is good enough if you speak clearly and grab people’s attention.
Walk
I’m sure you have heard of a Power Walk. It refers to someone walking confidently. Many times, your walk is all you need to command respect and attract people’s attention. You must maintain a straight back and try not to stoop or hunch. Don’t have your hands in your pocket and try not to fidget with your hands. Never look down when you are walking. Look up and at the people that are in the room. Looking down will signify a lack of confidence and you don’t want your audience thinking that. You can see if the path in front of you is clear from a distance and then walk. Walk in a straight line and take calculated steps.
Dressing
Focusing on your appearance will help you make a strong statement. You have to dress smartly in order to make an impact on the on looker. Dressing well does not mean knowing the latest fashion trends and wearing them. It refers to knowing what looks good on you and wearing it to enhance your personality. You can consult a stylist to help you pick outfits that will suit your personality. They might also help you pick out clothes that you can wear. You must also groom yourself well and remain as presentable as possible in order to appeal to others. You have to carry a handkerchief with you and use it to wipe your face and hands.
